Constitution of The International Seppala Association
Incorporated 2005 under the Yukon Societies Act
1. The name of the society is: International Seppala Association.
2. The purposes of the society:
The INTERNATIONAL SEPPALA ASSOCIATION shall be a nonprofit worldwide association of breeders, owners and fanciers of working sleddogs, particularly those directly descended from the sleddogs of Leonhard Seppala, from indigenous sleddogs imported from Siberia, from the Chinook sleddogs of Arthur Walden, and from other historic sleddog strains.
The objectives and purposes of the Association shall be as follows:
(1) Protection, preservation and maintenance of historic sleddog bloodlines, particularly (a) the original Leonhard Seppala bloodline as it descended through the kennels of William L. Shearer III and J. D. McFaul and was preserved in the 1970s by the Markovo rescue project, and (b) the original Arthur Walden "Chinook" line, as it descended through the kennels of Julia Lombard (Wonalancet-Hubbard) and Perry Greene, to the threatened extinction at, and subsequent rescue from, Perry Greene Kennels Inc. in 1981.
(2) To foster and encourage the preservation, furtherance and enhancement of versatile working sleddog ability in Seppala sleddogs, Chinooks and other historic sleddog breeds.
(3)(a) To encourage the importation of indigenous sleddog stock from Siberia, especially dogs similar to and compatible with the original Seppala bloodline, to facilitate and assist the preservation of import bloodlines and their integration into existing lineage; and (b) to protect the old "Chinook" bloodline preserved in the 1981 rescue effort, and facilitate breeding practices intended to restore and maintain the physical stature and working ability of the Chinook breed as defined by the selective breeding practices of Arthur Walden and Julia Lombard at Wonalancet-Hubbard Kennel.
(4) To gather, preserve and make available general information, historical and other data concerning Seppala, Chinook and other historic sleddogs; to foster knowledge and education about them among breeders, owners, trainers, dog-drivers, the canine fancy in general, and the general public.
(5) To collect and keep records of ancestry and other data of individual sleddogs and litters, and to make such data available to the Association's members in accurate certified form.
(6) To foster and vigilantly protect the welfare of sleddogs both individually and collectively, to promote high values and standards of dog care among members, and to take action to protect and represent sleddog welfare before the public and government at any and all levels.
(7) To sponsor and/or to hold such sleddog activities, as well as educational, social, fund-raising and other activities, as may be decided upon by the members.
